rookie lifeguard programme

 

The Rookie Lifeguard Programme has been designed to help junior surf members prepare to be a Surf Lifeguard. The programme aims to promote "practical lifeguarding" to the younger members and develop strong ties between senior and junior members as a result of involvement.

The target audience for this programme is 12-14 year old junior surf members wishing to become Surf Lifeguards. Obtaining your 200m Safety Badge is a pre-requisite.

Outcomes

At the completion of the programme candidates will be able to:

  • Identify the role of a Surf Lifeguard
  • Demonstrate a range of Surf Lifeguard skills

Once 14 years of age they are eligible to enrol in the SLGA (Surf Life Guard Award) to become a qualified lifeguard. Generally, the course is held during the October school holidays prior to the commencement of the surf season.

 OBK Rookie Guard Programme 2017-18

This Programme is a guide and subject to change depending on surf and weather conditions.

Parents are asked to assist with the program especially in providing support in water activities.

19th Nov - Opening day. Welcome, Registration, Data base, Shirt Size etc. Familiarization with equipment facility etc.

26th Nov - On Patrol with the Life Guards. Introduction to Patrol set up, Hazards and Patrol Operations etc.

3rd Dec - Tube Rescue.   Tips and techniques and practical activity.

10th Dec - Board work. Tips and techniques, Board Rescues with OBK Legend Ben Doggett. (Jinx might be away)

17th Dec - First Aid and CPR with Shona Brown. Parents invited to join in.

7th Jan - IRB Day. Get to know the IRB, Pre patrol set up,  IRB rides, (parents too) IRB Rescues, Run down procedures. This activity will only go ahead on a calm day.

14th Jan - Visit the Dunes Board, Bag and Bum sliding (bring a sack or piece of plastic.

Introduction to Cape Sanctuary with JD.

21st Jan - Surf Swimming. All you need to know about getting out to your patient quickly and safely. Group Swim with JD.

A new program for the remainder of the season will be distributed in the New Year.
