about junior surf
Ocean Beach Kiwi Surf Life Saving Club runs a Junior Surf (Nippers) program for 7 - 13 year olds on Sundays during the summer.
We do accept under 7 year olds if they are especially keen, are confident in the water & have a parent to assist.
The aim of the program is to teach some basic surf safety skills while having fun. Many of the children also take part in regular competitions against other Hawke's Bay clubs. The program relies on parents helping to coach and supervise on the beach and we expect one parent to stay for the entire session.
We start the season's training with some water confidence work in the pool before going to the beach (when the weather warms up!). There is no requirement for the children to be strong swimmers, but they will be encouraged to become competent swimmers as they progress through the season. Accordingly, we encourage the children to join swim programmes suited to their ability levels. Swimming is the key to the fitness and strength required in many surf life saving disciplines.
Swimming lessons, improvement classes and fitness training is provided by many pool complexes and swim clubs around Hawke's Bay e.g. Napier Aquahawks at the Onekawa Pool, Sundevils at Flaxmere Waterworld and the Greendale Swim Club at the Greendale Pool.

Ocean Athletes Competitive Program
Ocean Athletes are the OBK Surf Club’s junior competitive team representing the club at National/Regional Surf Competitions. The competitors are aged between 10-13 and train 3-4 times per week at the beach, and at Clive Pools. Each team member competes in both individual events and team relays.
Ocean Athletes (OA) is a great opportunity for our junior surf members to strive for peak fitness and skill, and to show real commitment to their training and each other. And it's great fun!
Check out our Ocean Athletes section for more information as this is updated throughout the season.
